The team operates on the interface between software, electronics, propulsion hardware, and the customer. We collaborate closely with software and electrical engineers on our embedded control electronics. Internship - Analysing night heat extremes in the Netherlands For the project '1001 hete nachten', Weather Impact does research on night time heat in The Netherlands together with 4 other organisations (Hogeschool van Amsterdam, KNMI, Climate Adaptation Services, and TAUW). In a changing climate, it is likely that summers in The Netherlands will get drier and warmer, thereby also increasing the possibilities of extreme temperature, both during day and night. There is still too little understanding of how big the problems of nighttime heat are, and when and where it mainly occurs. Internship Scope This internship focuses on data analyses on temperature measurements during the night. With the use of a large dataset (1000+ stations) of both official and crowd-sourced temperature observations the temporal and spatial variations in night heat will be investigated. During the analysis, various indicators will be used to study these variations: e.g. single extremes, cumulative heat, duration, influence of humidity. If time allows, the analysis will be expanded to future scenario's. Key responsibilities Analyse a large dataset of temperature observations using Python. Identify temporal and spatial variations in the occurrence of night heat across The Netherlands, with a special focus on extremes. However, air quality in Europe is always a complex mixture of anthropogenic emissions and natural sources. Dust as a natural source of air pollutants often affects air quality, visibility and even climate. Therefore, there is a growing interest among EU Member States and air quality policy makers to quantify the natural aerosol contribution to regional air quality. Moreover, within the European air quality regulations there is the possibility to subtract the natural dust contributions from PM exceedances of limit values. This requires the availability of a qualitative and quantitative estimate of the natural dust contributions at observation sites. What will be your role? The project aims to develop a computationally efficient tool using observational data in combination with an ensemble numerical model product to quantify the daily and annual dust contribution to air quality in European cities and observation sites. The research phase includes literature review and analysis of model and ground-based air quality station data. This will be followed by development, implementation and validation of a tool together as a team to determine annual average dust impact over Europe and number of natural dust-influenced air quality exceedance days. Decisions on evolving standards (e.g., changes, deprecations, extensions) rely heavily on indirect feedback (workshops, consultations), which are costly and time-consuming, and provide incomplete information. The emerging European paradigm of Data Spaces, which are decentralized architectures for controlled data sharing, combined with concepts from software 'Observability' (monitoring system internals via telemetry like logs, metrics, traces) offers a potential solution. Can we design a way to observe metadata patterns of data exchange within Data Spaces to provide SDOs with evidence-based insights? GenAI for Semantic Interoperability in Collaborative Networks: Achieving semantic interoperability in CNOs remains a challenge. It often requires complex standards, mappings, and governance processes (see BOMOS). Generative AI, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), demonstrates remarkable capabilities in understanding, generating, and translating human language and code. This technology holds immense potential to enhance or even transform how organizations achieve semantic agreement and data exchange. Yet, current models do not account for the inherent uncertainty of real-world processes, e.g. timing variations or unplanned maintenance, which forces designers to rely on heuristics and make compromises such as designing for worst case scenario. Significant performance could thus be gained by accounting for the system's uncertainty sources and tracking how this uncertainty propagates, for example, by computing how unexpected delays affect the timing of successive actions and the length of the production cycle. In a model-based design of a machine's logistics, such as those captured as LSAT or dataflow models, the scheduling of actions within given activities links closely to activity graphs found in standardized modeling languages like UML/SysML. Computing the start and end-times of nodes in such activity graphs is a key step towards analyzing the overall productivity of a flexible manufacturing system. In this project, the intern will develop and implement algorithms for the computation of timings with stochastic machine behavior. Depending on the intern's preference and expertise, the project may explore different approaches to compute the stochastic timing behavior of activity graphs such as MCMC sampling, importance sampling, and extreme value theory. Increase efficiency of ICT itself. Current ICT design did not have sustainability as a design criterium. This is slowly changing for the better. Obviously, newer hardware is often more efficient, but it should not stop here. Services can be optimized, AI algorithms can be improved, cloud usage can be orchestrated, and software can be developed more sustainable. Analysis of the impact of the hardware itself (scope 3 emissions). The production, shipment, installation, and teardown of all hardware also has a large climate impact. We work on modelling this impact through Life Cycle Analysis, covering all climate aspects during the hardware lifetime. The use of ICT is obviously driven by demand, even though demand is influenced by a lot of innovation as well. What are the side/rebound effects of reduced ICT use? Studying market forces and policy effects. Internship/ Graduate Engineer - Automation & Engineering (Heerlen DC) Distribution Centre 12 juni 2025 Distribution Centre 12 juni 2025 Location: Heerlen, Netherlands Department: Automation & Engineering Start Date: Summer 2025 / September 2025 About the Role: We are seeking enthusiastic students or recent graduates to join our Automation & Engineering team at our Heerlen Distribution Center (DC) for an internship or practical experience. As an intern/ trainee , you will become an integral part of our highly automated facility, working with cutting-edge automation technologies, including pouch systems, shuttles, GTP, sorters, and conveyors. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience, contribute to real-world automation projects, and gain insights into the dynamic world of logistics automation. Our goal is to onboard 1-2 trainees who will support the team during the go-live phase of Heerlen DC, scheduled for August 31, 2025. You will receive extensive training and mentorship from senior automation professionals while working on exciting projects that drive efficiency and innovation. We are ideally looking for someone to join us for six months , but we are very flexible depending on your availability. Shorter or longer durations are also possible. Following the internship, there is the potential for a permanent junior-level position , depending on performance and business needs. Key Responsibilities: Support the Automation & Engineering team in daily operations and ongoing projects Assist in the implementation and optimization of automation solutions within the facility Work closely with senior engineers and managers on system performance analysis and improvement initiatives Gain hands-on experience with automation technologies and warehouse control systems (WCS, WMS, ERP) Contribute to troubleshooting and maintenance activities to ensure seamless system operation Participate in cross-functional collaborations with operations, IT, and external automation suppliers Develop technical reports and documentation to support automation improvements Requirements: Currently studying or recently graduated with a bachelor or master's degree in Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field Strong interest in automation, robotics, and logistics technologies Basic knowledge of WCS, WMS, PLCs, and mechatronics is a plus Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to work in a fast-paced and highly automated environment Excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to learning Fluent in English
